Gospel: (Luke 9:43b–45)

Reflection:

The Gospel shows Jesus speaking openly about His coming Passion, yet the disciples shrink back. They hear the words, but they cannot bear their weight. Their fear is not confusion alone-it is the human instinct to turn away from anything that threatens our comfort, our imagined future, or our fragile sense of control. It is the quiet interior whisper: “I don’t want to know.”

We recognize ourselves in them. We, too, avoid the truths that demand surrender. We avoid the Cross in all its forms-suffering, sacrifice, humility, obedience, letting go. Yet the Cross is not something Jesus falls into. It is something He walks toward, deliberately, lovingly, for our salvation.

And in that act, the Cross is transformed. What was once a Roman instrument of humiliation becomes the throne of the Lamb. What was once defeat becomes victory. What was once shame becomes glory. What was once death becomes the doorway home.

This is the mystery at the center of Christian faith: God takes the very thing we fear most and turns it into the place where grace enters.

Saints Cosmas and Damian, whom the Church honors today, lived this mystery. Their healing work, their generosity, their steadfastness, and ultimately their martyrdom reveal that the Cross is not only an event in Christ’s life - it is a pattern for our own. They carried their daily crosses with fidelity and patience, and in doing so, they became signs of the Kingdom.

The way of the Cross is not a detour. It is not an interruption. It is the road. The way of the Cross is the way of the Kingdom of Heaven. The way of the Cross is the way of God. The way of the Cross is the way home.

We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you, because by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world.
