Today's Mass Reading and Reflection: Humility, Faith, and Divine Mercy

The first readings today offer profound lessons on humility, faith, and the consequences of speaking against God’s chosen servants. In
 (
Numbers 12:1-13), Miriam and Aaron challenge Moses’ unique relationship with God, questioning his authority. Their pride leads to divine rebuke, and Miriam is struck with leprosy. Yet, even in discipline, God’s mercy is evident, Moses, the meekest of men, intercedes for her, pleading, “Please, not this! Pray, heal her!” (Numbers 12:13). This moment reminds us that leadership is God-given, and murmuring against it invites correction. Yet, repentance and prayer can restore what sin has broken.

The Psalm response from Psalm 51 “Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned”, ties these readings together. Like Miriam and Aaron, we sometimes speak or act out of pride. Like Peter, we often let fear overshadow faith. Yet, God’s mercy is always within reach if we turn to Him. “Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned”. Please sing this all day with me.

The Gospel (Matthew 14:22-36) presents another test of faith. Peter, bold yet wavering, steps out onto the water but falters when fear overtakes him. His cry, “Lord, save me!”, points to our own moments of doubt. Jesus’ immediate response, stretching out His hand, reveals His readiness to rescue us when our faith is weak. I know I struggle with a lot sometimes because of doubts. The disciples’ awestruck confession, “Truly, you are the Son of God,” affirms that even in our storms, Christ reveals His divinity. When I am weak, I remember that Jesus is everything.

Points of Reflection:

  • Have I, like Miriam and Aaron, questioned God’s chosen ways or leaders? I might not like certain leaders in government, but I am a big believer that only God can make way for certain individuals in position of power to get there. While it is easy to criticize I understand that, praying for leaders is the best input I can offer them.

  • In what areas of my life do I need to trust Jesus more, stepping out in faith despite the storm?

  • Do I, like Moses, intercede for others even when they have wronged me?

May we learn humility, deepen our trust, and always cry out to the Lord, knowing He will stretch out His hand to save us.

Have a blessed day,

~Pal Ronnie~
