Mass Readings and Reflection for February 28th 2026

First Reading:
 (Deuteronomy 26:16–19)

Responsorial Psalm: (Psalm 119)

Response: Happy are they who follow the law of the Lord.

The psalm praises those who walk blamelessly in God’s law, who seek Him with their whole heart and strive to keep His commandments faithfully.

Gospel Acclamation

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory.
This is the acceptable time; this is the day of salvation.

Gospel: (Matthew 5:43–48)

Reflection:

The readings place before us the reality of covenant, God and His people bound together in relationship. In Deuteronomy, God calls Israel to holiness: to keep His commandments with all their heart, mind, and soul. He calls them His treasured possession. This is not burden, but gift. The law was given so they could live in freedom, peace, and joy as His children.

Yet in daily life, we recognize how often we fall short. We desire to love God fully, yet struggle even to love those close to us, let alone our enemies. The command to holiness can feel overwhelming.

But the key lies in the promise: “as He promised.” Holiness is not something we accomplish alone. It is God’s work in us. He is the One who promises. He is the One who gives grace.

In the Gospel, the disciples gather around Jesus on the mountain. This posture is essential. Every time we attend Mass, pray, or open Scripture, we gather around Jesus. He is the Teacher. He gives the grace. He forms our hearts.

Holiness is not self-improvement. It is becoming like Christ, thinking like Him, loving like Him, acting like Him. Only grace can transform our hearts. Over time, through prayer, fasting, almsgiving, the Eucharist, and the sacraments, grace truly works. We begin to see glimpses: moments when we forgive, when we pray for someone difficult, when we love beyond our natural capacity.

God is not primarily concerned with flawless performance. He desires our hearts. When we fail, we return to the Father. Every return is met with rejoicing.

As we journey toward Easter, we ask for one thing:
“Jesus, make my heart like Yours.”

It is His promise. It is His grace. And little by little, He fulfills it in us.

Amen 🙏

God bless you and happy weekend.
