An Open Letter to Students Returning to School.

I couldn't say it better. Just watch it from our own buddy John Green himself.

JUST IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T GOT HIM RIGHT AS HE SPEAKS FAST, READ BELWOW.

Good morning, Hank, it's Tuesday!

Today I'd like to deliver an open letter to students returning to school.

Dear Students returning to school, not to speed your re-entry into formal education with a pop quiz, or anything, but in what year do you think primary education became mandatory for all American children?

1918. Germany had primary compulsory education from the late 18th century in Japan thanks to the reforms by 1900 95% of Japanese kids were in school. In England it happened around 1880, but regardless of where you live, primary education became a requirement sometime after 1775. That probably seems like a long time ago to you, but if you look at, like, human history since the agricultural revolution, the entire period of time that has featured compulsory education anywhere in the world looks like this. You'll also note that this 250 year period has been a pretty good run for humans featuring, you know, steam engines, the internet, antibiotics, skyscrapers a stunning increase in life expectancy, home pizza delivery, water purification plants, and landing a freaking mini cooper on mars.

Needless to say this is not a coincidence. Take for example Adam Steltzner, the lead engineer on the Curiosity Rover's Decent and Landing Team. He went to a publicly funded high school before getting both his bachelors degree and his doctorate from publicly subsidized universities. So let me ask you a question students about to return to school: How freaking psyched are you for the end of summer? How psyched are you to have the opportunity to learn about the universe and its inhabitants for several hours a day at no cost to you? The answer of course is that if you're anything like I was you're not psyched at all, I mean, A.) you might be a bit of a social outcast, I know I was, I never really learned how to shave and that's fine now but back then when I had the sony my first mustache it was just a disaster.

and B.) you may often feel like your studies are mind numbing instead of mind stimulating. Like, who wants to read The Taming of the Shrew, you basically have to translate it from Shakespeare into English, which is ridiculous because there's already an excellent filmic translation available in the form of 10 Things I Hate About You.

So, if you're anything like me, you're going to spend a lot of time whining that 1.) none of this will ever be useful in your real life and 2.) your teachers are stupid, and 3.) math is really hard, and you'll never understand it, ditto physics, history is boring, French is just an endless series of je ne sais pas, literature is an impossible hunt for symbols, and physical education is an oxymoron.

Well here's the thing, when you watch the Curiosity rover land it is far more moving and exciting if you understand the physics, and the math, and the history behind that moment. French is useful because the French do speak English but they pretend not to, and it's not only literature that's symbolic, all communication among people is symbolic, as is consciousness itself, and physical education is not an oxymoron because your body is not born knowing how to do this .

But yes, your teachers may be stupid. So are you, so am I, so are everyone . The whole pleasure in being a human is in being stupid but learning to be less stupid together.

But more important than all of that you need to remember that school is not about you. School doesn't exist for your benefit or for the benefit of your parents. Schools exist for the benefit of me. The reason I pay taxes for schools even though I don't have a kid in school is that I am better off in a well-educated world. Public education isn't a charity project; I pay for your schools because I want you to grow up and make my life better. I want you to make me beautiful books that will bring me pleasure and consolation. I want you to make me cooler cars for me to drive, and drugs so that I can live a longer, healthier life. I"m paying for you education in the hopes that you will invent a microwave pizza with actually crispy crust and that you'll spread the availability of the internet so I can get more Youtube views in Zambia.

Your education isn't just about you, your nation is making an investment in you because the believe that you are worth it. So the next that you're like half asleep fantasizing about being a kid chosen for a special mission or wizard school, or whatever, please remember something: you are special, and you've chosen for a special that was denied to 99.9% of all humans ever. We need you, we believe in you, and we're counting on you.

Best wishes,

John Green

Hank, quick post script for people nerdy enough to be interested in education outside of class please check out Crash Course and SciShow our educational initiatives.

Hank, congratulations on Curiosity not crashing into Mars. I know that's like the highlight of your year. I will see you on Fri-.

Michio Kaku: The Intelligence Revolution

Dr. Kaku is talking.

The Wickedness in People-Read On

Shock!!

Life is very interesting in every way possible. I sit down to think of some of the people we come across in this life and their very life style often end up motivating us or serve as a source of inspiration for good.

However, some people are opposite and would by no means have any positive impact in you and they will be the very people who would want to discredit you when they hear someone say nice things about you. Hey! wait, you believe me; if you as an individual haven't had any contact with somebody and haven't seen what they are capable of doing and someone who does tell you who they are, you might as well believe and be quiet if you don't have anything good to say about them.

Why am I saying this? I'm not venting but I think people ought to know that it pays to strive to be a better person in this life wherever we find ourselves. We ought to always strive to preserve some moral integrity as we move on. There can't never be any better time than now. You will never know what tomorrow will bring.

I recommend you read" The Genealogy of Morals", a very magnificent masterpiece by one of my favorite and sophisticated Philosophers of all time, Friedrich Nietzsche. All men I can say have some good and bad in their hearts but we must always try to let the good reign at all cost.

Sometimes we tend to make others worthless than their real life's value, I mean the price tag on them if we want to be considered as commodities. How could that be? that is callousness my brothers and sisters. Let's be very very cognizant of our actions and deeds, whatever goes around must definitely come around.

I rest my case- I know some will read and might not understand but if nothing at all, just be positive to the deeds of others just as you want for yours. If you can't give then forget it you will not be able to get it back.

"They spoke a lot of good about you, and I said I know you, you were indolent and was never serious" Even my mom could never understand who I was, how more you a passerby?.

Anyway, last week, two beautiful young men in Boston had their hearts infiltrated by evil-which prompted them to plot an attack on some 20,000 plus of people who converged at this year's Boston Marathon in Massachusetts. Talking about evil, they detonated three separate bombs at the finish line of the Marathon killing three people and injuring over 200 others.
To pursue these perpetrators, the entire city and all the colleges where shut down the next day following the slaying of yet another victim, a police officer at MIT.

Lo and behold, the truth and the complete identity of the suspects came to light when one was killed in gun exchange with police officials and later suspect two was nabbed in a boat behind somebody's house. These two gentlemen happened to be brothers and might be hailed heroes by some people somewhere for their actions-God help us.

They are believed to have been of Chenchen, Russia decent and grew up in the U.S. why they did what they did accordingly was due to the fact that they were not happy with U.S occupation and imperialism in the Muslims World such as Iraq and Afghanistan. So bottom line, religious fundamentalism was a key factor in this attack.
I had and will always imagine if this and many other attacks are going to be solutions for ending issues of such disagreements. What happened to dialogue?

It could be bigger than that,...let's wait and see what suspect two who is still responding to treatment of gun wounds in Boston has to tell us in few days.

Peace be still.

Yours Pal,
Ronald:)

"You have a right to experiment with your life. You will make mistakes. And they are right too. No, I think there was too rigid a pattern. You came out of an education and are supposed to know your vocation. Your vocation is fixed, and maybe ten years later you find you are not a teacher anymore or you're not a painter anymore. It may happen. It has happened. I mean Gauguin decided at a certain point he wasn't a banker anymore; he was a painter. And so he walked away from banking. I think we have a right to change course. But society is the one that keeps demanding that we fit in and not disturb things. They would like you to fit in right away so that things work now" Anaa Nin
