A Reflection on Joyful Anticipation on 2nd Sunday of Advent December 8th 2024

Today, on the Second Sunday of Advent, the Advent candle was lit during Mass, symbolizing the light of Christ coming into the world.

The homily reminded us of the essence of this sacred season: a time of joyful anticipation as we prepare for the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Advent calls us to reflect deeply on what Christ’s return will mean for us. Scripture paints a beautiful picture of this restoration in Isaiah 11:6-9:

“The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or destroy all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”

This vision of paradise is one of peace, harmony, and the absence of pain or fear. It reminds us that our ultimate longing is not for the fleeting joys of this world, but for God’s presence and the restoration of His perfect creation.

We often seek joy or happiness in our daily lives through accomplishments or milestones: securing a spouse, getting that long-awaited promotion, buying our dream house or car, building a family, or achieving financial security. While these are good and worthwhile pursuits, they do not fill the deeper void within us. The true source of our longing is God. His presence is the only thing that can restore us to the paradise where there will be no pain, no hurt, and no disappointment.

This Advent, let us focus on welcoming God into our lives, finding joy in His presence rather than in the temporary achievements of this world. As we light the Advent candles each week, may they remind us of the ultimate light of Christ, who is our true hope and joy.

I hope you and your family have a blessed and peaceful Sunday.

God bless you

Pal Ronnie
