The biggest news of the day, today Monday, is that the outgoing President of the U.S. Joe Biden issued a full and unconditional pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, who was initially convicted on federal gun and tax evasion charges. This decision spared Hunter from a scheduled sentencing later this month, on December 12th, 2024.
From a personal note, Biden’s actions are understandable to all. Any father who loves their child and have the power to shield them or any family member from suffering might do the same. As the President of the United States, arguably the most powerful position in the world, Biden had the means and power to intervene decisively and that is exactly what he did. Now is this move controversial? of course, else we wouldn't be talking about it.
What has fueled the public debate, however, is Biden’s prior declaration that he would not pardon his son or intervene in his legal troubles. This swift reversal before Hunter could even appear in court has led many to question the credibility of political figures and the legal system at large.
Mr. Biden in defense of his move stated that Hunter, his son, was "selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted" due to their familial relationship. Don't forget that Hunter is a lawyer himself and knows the law all too well and has pleaded guilty for his actions. Contrary to the Big guy's assertions, thus the president, this has nothing to do with him being targeted simply by the fact that Hunter is the first son etc. but has everything to do with the law.
This incident goes to exemplify what some see as hypocrisy among politicians: often saying one thing and doing another. It also reinforced the lack of trust the public has for the judicial system at large.
Critics across the board also highlights the privilege evident in this situation.
Think about it, this pardon not only covers the two key charges of the gun nd taxes, but all offenses committed between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024, including the period when Hunter served on the board of Burisma, the infamous Ukrainian natural gas company.
That means any wrong doing these past ten years have all been dissolved.
So the obvious question is, where is justice?
If Hunter Biden was your average American citizen, it is argued, he would likely face jail time for a long time to come. Instead, as the son of the “leader of the free world,” his fate differs. That is the face of injustice or in plain terms corruption in case you were wondering.
It is also tempting for me to imagine the President advising his son after the pardon, saying “Son, go and sin no more.” I can only hope he told the son that, for a lot of people, who perhaps are more innocent could use such pardons.
This story serves as a reminder of the complexities of power, family, and justice, making it a fitting topic for reflection here in Ronnie’s World.
I remain your pragmatic pal,
Ronnie
