Reflection – On God’s Provision and the Parable of a Good Sower

Today’s Responsorial Psalm reminds us:

“The Lord gave them bread from heaven.” (Psalm 78:24)

In the First Reading (Exodus 16:2–4, 12–15), we see how God provided for the Israelites in the desert:

“I will now rain down bread from heaven for you.” (Exodus 16:4)

Even after all that God had done to bring them out of slavery, the Israelites still grumbled. And yet, despite their complaints, God responded with mercy and provision. He sent manna from heaven to feed them. This shows us the unrelenting goodness and patience of God.

But we are not so different. How many of us still grumble today, despite how far God has brought us? We forget so easily the ways God has already provided, and instead of gratitude, we fall into complaint. But today’s readings invite us to pause and reflect on God’s faithfulness.

In the Gospel (Matthew 13:1–23), Jesus tells the parable of the sower:

“A sower went out to sow... some seed fell on rocky ground... some fell among thorns... but some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit.” (Matthew 13:3–8)

This parable reminds us that God's Word is constantly being sown into our lives, but how we receive it matters. Are our hearts like the good soil, ready to absorb and bear fruit? Or are we caught in the rocks of doubt, the thorns of worry, or the path of distraction?

God is always faithful. He gives bread from heaven, both physical and spiritual. May we receive it with gratitude and let His Word take deep root in our hearts so we may bear fruit that lasts.

God bless you
