Blessed Mother Assumption Mass Readings

Today is the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a holiday and going to church today is not optional and I'm already off duty and able to join with the faithful of the community in prayer.

Mass Reading:

1st Reading (Revelation 11:19; 12:1-6, 10)

“A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.”

Responsorial Psalm: (Psalm 45:9)

“On your right stands the queen in gold of Ophir.”

2nd Reading: (1 Corinthians 15:20-27)

“For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”

Gospel (Luke 1:39-56)

“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”

Reflection – The Assumption: Mary’s Victory Over Sin

Today, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mystery of her being taken up body and soul into heavenly glory. This unique privilege was granted to her because she was without sin and shared completely in Christ’s mission, from His birth to His death and resurrection.

Though Scripture does not explicitly record the Assumption, biblical images and Church teaching point to its truth: Mary is the woman clothed with the sun (Revelation 12), the incorruptible Ark of the Covenant, the blessed one whom all generations will call blessed (Lk 1). Just as Enoch and Elijah were taken up into heaven, so too was Mary, by God’s singular grace.

Her Assumption reminds us that heaven is the destiny of all who, like her, live in union with Christ and persevere in holiness. It is both a promise and a challenge to conquer sin, remain faithful, and fix our hearts on the things above.

We all have goals but none is greater than making it to heaven. Just think about how fast everything falls apart, when we are no longer able to maintain them. Family, homes, cars, relationships, jobs etc. May we fix our gaze on the destination our Blessed Mother was assumed into.

Prayer for the Day: O Mary, assumed into heaven, pray for us, that we too may one day share in your glory. Amen.

God bless you
