The Trump-Putin summit in Anchorage may have produced no agreements, but it revealed everything about power, leverage, and perception in today’s geopolitics.
Trump’s remarks were deliberately vague: “We have made some headway. There is no deal until there is a deal.” That line is classic Mr. Trump, a way to sound optimistic while saying almost nothing. Yet even that was enough to dominate headlines around the world.
For Putin, the win was immediate. Two years after being cast as an untouchable pariah, there he was, face-to-face with the world’s most powerful man, the U.S. president smiling and shaking hands. Optics, however superficial, matter, and this moment shattered the West’s narrative of total isolation.
Trump, meanwhile, revealed his strategy. Instead of sanctioning Russia directly, he punished Moscow’s buyers, slapping tariffs on India and threatening China, while sparing Russia itself. Kids, watch and learn how this game is played. It’s interesting, and it’s important. By doing this, Trump kept Putin at the table. It’s a clever move: pressure Russia’s lifelines without closing the door on negotiations.
Trump also showed his blunt view of Ukraine’s position. When asked what advice he would give President Zelensky, he said: “You’ve got to make a deal. Russia is a very big power, and they are not.” In other words: Ukraine should accept reality. This was the same man who humiliated Zelensky at the White House just a few months ago, and that memory is still fresh. Is the West exhausted in its support for Ukraine? Maybe.
This summit wasn’t about peace, not yet. It was about leverage. Putin gained legitimacy. Trump gained maneuvering space. And Ukraine was reminded, painfully, that in global politics, power is never equal.
I just hope they can come to something soon to prevent more suffering and loss.
God bless America 🙌
